This
picture was taken on a trip to Redding California to pick up my neighbors
boat that was being serviced. His son and I checked into the motel in the
late afternoon, rested briefly, we got a bite to eat and set out for a
late afternoon of photography. It was raining slightly every now and then.
We randomly headed east on Highway 44 towards Lassen Volcanic National
Park. Along the way there is a section of the highway where it is perfectly
straight for about 7 miles, it only varies in elevation. It starts out
going down hill till you reach Battle Creek, from there it starts back
up hill. It is lined with tall pine trees on both sides and is a interesting
scene to view off in the distance down this long and straight portion of
the road. We stopped at Battle Creek and grabbed our camera gear, by now
it was drizzling continuously. As I walked up stream about 50 yards I came
across this ivy type foliage in its full yellow/orange autumn color. I
knew immediately this would be a great image, but setting up the camera
was difficult due to an unfortunate tree in the location of optimum composition.
I made due by setting up around its largely exposed root system. I chose
to use an dark yellow filter to brighten the yellow foliage to a bright
white. Keeping everything dry was difficult due to the rain, but I think
the rain added to the atmosphere of the autumn foliage and the forest beyond.
This is one of my favorite images. |
